Weeknote #1

Week 11 of 2026 - March 9th to 15th

Some things I’ve been working on

At work I've been working on a total revamp of our permissions system. The old system has evolved naturally over many years by many different developers, and has some confusing patterns for customers to manage access. The new system will be fully roles based, and hopefully serve as a foundation for years to come. There will be some scary migrations to manage as I roll it out though!

At home we received delivery of a large futon cushion-thing from The Futon Company. It was intended to be a comfy layer for our reading neuk, but it was SO THICK that it ended up totally dominating the space, and so lumpy that it just looked untidy. Luckily they took it back as a return with no fuss (despite saying no returns on the website). Next on the docket is a custom memory foam layer like our campervan has.

We need some cushions like these, but for the house.

Some other things I’ve been doing

Little Maggie (our Golden Retriever) continues to grow up - she's 7 months now, and is doing great. Around a month ago she figured out that she could just not do what we ask, but I've been making some progress on that recently. If you come then you get the treat, if you don't come then I will come and get you and you won't get the treat.

Teach a dog to browse the internet

The board game club I go to in Innerleithen has been a lot of fun. Both because a new friend in the village is coming along (village fwiend) and because I've won the last 3 games I've played (Viticulture, and Istanbul x2). Looking forward to playing more games!

I finally managed to track down the owner of the rental cottage next to ours! The guttering has been dripping onto our roof causing an annoying rhythmic thud, thud, thud in the dining room when it's raining. It's been a problem for 6 months, so it's not exactly an emergency but great to have made a little bit of progress.

I managed to wriggle out of our 2 year contract with Sky early, which has allowed me to upgrade out internet from 75mbps to 900+, for the same price. Win!

810mbps isn't quite 900+ but I'll take it

Some puzzles

We've been struggling to find somewhere for Maggie to stay for some upcoming overnight trips we have - but I'm sure we'll figure out something. It might just cost a bit more than we were expecting.

Our campervan has a coolant leak, AND it's MOT expires next week, AND it needs a service. I had a look myself with the help of a nearby garage, and it seems to be leaking from the turbo which might turn out to be expensive. It's booked into a more tech-y garage next week, so we'll see how that turns out.
